Sharp to produce smartphone camera parts at Kameyama plant

Company eyes resumption of dividend payments in fiscal 2017

Sharp President Tai Jeng-wu

OSAKA -- Sharp will start producing parts for smartphone cameras at its plant complex in Kameyama, President Tai Jeng-wu told The Nikkei Tuesday.

The Japanese company will double production capacity of such parts, including the contribution of a partner manufacturer in Vietnam, in a push to reinforce its high-profitability electronic parts business.

The Kameyama complex in Mie Prefecture is Sharp's principal manufacturing base for liquid crystal display panels.

Tai also said Sharp will consider resuming dividend payments in the year through March 2018. The company has not paid dividends since fiscal 2012.

Sharp supplies camera parts to Apple and other users through its Taiwanese parent Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn, and other channels. The company decided to increase production as Apple plans to adopt high-performance cameras in its new iPhones. The increase may involve the use of Foxconn's facilities as well, Tai said.

Tai has set the goal for Sharp of posting a net profit in fiscal 2017 through cost reductions and higher sales of products such as LCD TVs.

The president is considering handing over his post to a Japanese executive when Sharp returns to the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. An ideal successor should be younger than 60 and have marketing experience, Tai said, adding that the choice will be made through consultation with Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou.
