Toridoll to serve up ramen to Italian pasta lovers

TOKYO -- Restaurant chain operator Toridoll Holdings will bring Japanese ramen noodles and sushi to Italy with new outlets early next year.

The operator of Marugame Seimen udon noodle restaurants will set up a subsidiary as early as this month in Milan, where its first ramen restaurant is slated to open by February, followed by a location of the sushi-centered Tokyo Table by March.

By 2020, Toridoll aims to have 10 ramen and five sushi restaurants throughout Italy and to make headway into other European countries. The plan is to attract Europan customers by fine-tuning flavors to the tastes of local patrons.

Japanese food made a splash in Milan at the Expo 2015 world's fair, but Toridoll recognized a lack of restaurants offering Japanese food in the region, and smelled opportunity.

Last year, Toridoll acquired a majority stake in the Amsterdam-based restaurant chain Wok to Walk, through which it continues to expand Asian noodles throughout Europe. Their Milan venture, however, will be the company's first push into Europe through an in-house brand. The company plans to step up expansion of its network of restaurants by adding new stand-alone brands.
