Toshiba to offer corporate maritime-shipping service
TOKYO -- Japanese electronics major Toshiba will in early 2015 launch a service for other companies under which it will lease empty space in its containers being shipped from China, sources told The Nikkei on Thursday.
Toshiba will receive orders from nongroup companies through its subsidiary Toshiba Logistics. Toshiba, which is aiming to expand the group's logistics business, plans to offer lower rates than major shipping companies.
Toshiba Logistics will start with shipments from southern China, and will expand the service to other Chinese locations if there is sufficient demand. The main target will be Japanese clothing companies and electronics parts manufacturers.
IC tags will be attached to every box being shipped to make it easy to sort boxes from multiple customers and enable real-time tracking.
