TDK completes $1.3bn purchase of US sensor supplier

Japanese component maker wants to capitalize on internet of things

TOKYO -- Japanese electronic parts maker TDK announced on Thursday that it has acquired US sensor company InvenSense for about $1.3 billion.

TDK intends to include sensors that detect rotation and movement in its product lineup. This, it reckons, will enhance its competitiveness in the internet of things field.

TDK envisions the InvenSense deal helping to boost the sales of its sensor unit to 200 billion yen ($1.79 billion) in the year through March 2021, from 43 billion yen in the most recent fiscal year.
