Established in 1955 as a construction company, YTL -- through its subsidiary YTL Power International -- has evolved into a leading utilities provider in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the U.K. In Malaysia, it owns two gas-fired power plants with a capacity of 1,212 megawatts.
YTL wholly owns Wessex Water, a water and sewerage operator in the U.K., which the company acquired from defunct U.S. electricity trader Enron. These utilities contributed about 80% of the group's revenue.
The company owns luxury hotels in Europe, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand.
YTL is headed by Managing Director Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, a civil engineer by training, together with his siblings. He is the eldest son of the founder, Yeoh Tiong Lay, after whom the company is named. The Yeoh family owns a majority of YTL's shareholdings. YTL has three listed subsidiaries in Malaysia and another in Singapore. It is also dual-listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
