Company background

Bank Central Asia is an Indonesia's largest private bank that was founded in 1955. BCA has strong ties across many different Indonesian business sectors. It focuses on corporate banking but has recently branched out into the consumer sector. It bought a motorcycle financing company in 2013 and has launched mobile banking services.

The bank has undergone dramatic changes in ownership in the past two decades. BCA was initially controlled by Salim Group, led by ethnic-Chinese tycoon Sudono Salim, also known as Liem Sioe Liong, but it was bailed out by the government amid a run during the Asian financial crisis. By 1999, the state owned more than 90% of the bank's shares.

After a restructuring of its bad loans, the majority of BCA's shares were bought by an investment vehicle led by another ethnic-Chinese tycoon, Robert Budi Hartono. The subsequent rise in BCA's market value has helped Hartono become the richest man in Indonesia, according to Forbes magazine. Liem Sioe Liong's son Anthoni Salim also owns a small stake. BCA President Jahja Setiaatmadja previously worked for Indomobil, a Salim Group affiliate.
