Business summary

NMDC Ltd. engages in the exploration of a range of minerals including iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, lime stone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite and beach sands. It operates through Iron Ore, and Other Minerals and Services segments. The company was founded on November 15, 1958 and is headquartered in Hyderabad, India.

Company background

NMDC is a state-owned producer of iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, diamond, graphite and other minerals. It is India's largest producer of iron ore -- producing about 30 million tons annually. The Indian government holds an 80% stake in NMDC but has announced plans to divest 10% of its shareholdings.

Narendra Kothari, a metallurgy engineering graduate, has been NMDC's government-appointed chairman-cum-managing director since April 2014. Before taking up the position, he was CEO of a Steel Authority of India (SAIL) plant in the eastern town of Burnpur. During his three-decade-plus stint at SAIL, Kothari worked extensively in the steel industry, in India and abroad.

NMDC, which operates under the Ministry of Steel, was set up in 1958 to explore for and mine minerals. Since then, it has transformed the hilly and dense jungle of Bastar -- in central Chhattisgarh, also home to the famous Bailadila range, which contains 1.2 billion tons of high-grade iron ore -- into one of India's key states. Bailadila, which means "the hump of an ox" in the local dialect, was remote, inaccessible and replete with wild life. NMDC changed that. In January 2015, the company announced the establishment of a wholly owned subsidiary, NMDC Steel, its sixth subsidiary.
