Business summary

Coal India Ltd. operates as mining company, which engages in the production and sale of coal. The company was founded in June 14, 1973 and is headquartered in Kolkata, India.

Company background

Coal India is the largest coal producing company in the world. It is responsible for more than 80% of India's coal production and commands nearly 74% of the country's coal market. Coal India is a holding company with seven wholly owned coal producing subsidiaries, one mine planning and consultancy company in India, and a fully-owned mining company in Mozambique. The Indian government has about a 80% stake in the company, which is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal. Coal India acquires metallurgical and thermal coal assets overseas through Coal Videsh.

Coal India was established in Nov. 1975 after the government nationalized the coal industry to manage India's growing energy requirements. The government first acquired 226 coking coal mines in 1972 under Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL) and then took control of 711 non-coking coal mines in 1973 under the Coal Mines Authority (CMAL). Coal India was finally set up as a formal holding company to manage both BCCL and CMAL.

Sutirtha Bhattacharya, a senior bureaucrat, is the chairman and managing director of Coal India. Prior to assuming his current position in January, Bhattacharya led the state-owned Singareni Collieries Company in the southern Telangana state. Bhattacharya has vast experience across different sectors of the Indian government, having joined the public service as a bureaucrat in 1985. He also held the position of principal secretary (energy) in the Andhra Pradesh state government, where he focused on ensuring quality power supply at reasonable prices.
