Exiled former Beijing envoy to Hong Kong dies

YASUO AWAI, Nikkei staff writer

HONG KONG -- Xu Jiatun, the exiled former Hong Kong bureau chief for China's state-owned Xinhua News Agency, died in Los Angeles on Wednesday at the age of 100, Hong Kong media reported.

Xu, as a member of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, was assigned to Hong Kong in 1983 and worked on the return of the city to the mainland.

He fled to the U.S. following the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing, during which he tacitly sympathized with pro-democracy protesters.
