Company Background
Baoshan Iron & Steel is China's leading steelmaker, based in Shanghai. It is a subsidiary of state-owned holding company Baosteel Group, and is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Established in 1977, Baosteel Group launched a steel plant with technical assistance from Japan's Nippon Steel, now Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, and other steelmakers. It founded Baoshan Iron & Steel and listed its stocks in 2000. Baosteel Group owns some 80% of the company.
Its main plant is located in the Baoshan district of Shanghai. In September, the company's new steel plant will start operations in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, with an annual production capacity of 10 million tons. It will be the first large steel plant in the province, which is home to many factories of electronics and auto makers, and will also be positioned as a supply center for Southeast Asia. It has about 38,000 employees.
Chen Derong, president of Baosteel Group, joined the company in 2014 after he served as party secretary of Wenzhou and vice governor of Zhejiang province.
