TOKYO -- Kohlberg Kravis Roberts finally succeeded in buying a substantial stake in Hitachi Kokusai Electric, ending months of a takeover tussle with Elliott Management. But it may be Elliott that has emerged the ultimate winner, having tackled two problems with one solution.
