TOKYO -- A Chinese spacecraft carrying the first samples ever collected from the far side of the moon returned to Earth on Tuesday, marking Beijing's latest milestone in space exploration and promising to unlock lunar mysteries.

The return capsule landed in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region shortly after 2 p.m. local time, live footage from state media showed. Helicopters soon descended on the landing site, after which China's space agency declared the mission a "complete success."
