TOKYO -- A hypersonic missile defense system being developed by the U.S. and Japan is "a model for cooperation between the two governments" and their national defense industries, Kathy Warden, CEO of American military contractor Northrop Grumman, told Nikkei.
Tokyo and Washington are developing a system to intercept hypersonic missiles called Glide Phase Interceptor. Hypersonic weapons fly at more than five times the speed of sound and can follow an irregular trajectory, making them difficult to intercept. China, Russia and North Korea are ahead in terms of technology and development.
