TANEGASHIMA SPACE CENTER, Japan -- Japan achieved its first successful launch of the next-generation H3 rocket on Saturday, an important milestone in the country's push to become a competitive player in the commercial space industry.

The success, which included placing two small satellites into orbit, comes nearly a year after the first attempt ended in failure
