TOKYO -- Officials from Japan's Defense Ministry are joining eight Japanese companies to attend Europe's largest defense equipment expo next week, in a bid to secure contracts for a sluggish domestic defense industry.

Exporting equipment through deals from exhibitions and other means is "an important security policy," said Gen. Yoshihide Yoshida, chief of staff of the Self-Defense Forces Joint Staff, at a news conference Thursday.
