TOKYO -- This week's successful launches of Boeing's Starliner capsule and SpaceX's Starship rocket highlight how private-sector competition is driving the U.S. space program, a model that countries like China, India and Japan are drawing on as well.

The Starliner, carrying two NASA astronauts, docked early Friday, Japan time, with the International Space Station, where it will stay for a week before bringing its crew back to Earth.
