TOKYO -- Japan's agriculture ministry plans to add environmental conditions to all of its subsidies by April 2027, looking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle other pollutants such as agricultural chemicals.

Starting with fiscal 2024 in April, applicants for some subsidies will need to submit a checklist covering various requirements. These include using appropriate amounts of fertilizer and pesticides, cutting down on fuel use and reducing waste along with disposing of it properly, as well as items related to biodiversity. The ministry will not set numerical benchmarks as a rule.
