FRANKFURT, Germany -- BMW will cooperate with Toyota Motor to develop fuel cell vehicles under plans announced Thursday, aiming to begin mass production in 2028 as a new option amid slowing global sales of electric vehicles.

"This is a milestone in automotive history: the first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium manufacturer," said Oliver Zipse, chairman of BMW's management board, in the companies' news releases. "And it will herald an era of significant demand for fuel cell electric vehicles," he said.
