TOKYO -- Western and Japanese automakers are struggling while Chinese players soar, with electric vehicle giant BYD overtaking Ford Motor for the first time to take sixth place in global sales in the July-to-September quarter.
BYD sold 1.13 million units during the period, up 38% on the year and exceeding 1 million vehicles for the first time on a quarterly basis. By surpassing Ford, which ranked seventh for the quarter, BYD became the first Chinese automaker to overtake one of the "Big Three" U.S. companies. The data comes from the automakers themselves and research firm MarkLines.
