GUANGZHOU -- Chinese EV giant BYD is accelerating into its home market for premium SUVs, looking to challenge the dominance of German brands such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz in the sector.

In late March, BYD unveiled its Denza N9 luxury SUV at its headquarters in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, joining local rivals in launching models that feature the number nine in their names. In Chinese culture, nine is considered an auspicious number, symbolizing longevity, supremacy and perfection. Most of these high-end "9-series" models are priced above 300,000 yuan (about $41,000).
