BEIJING -- The parent companies of China's state-owned Chongqing Changan Automobile and Dongfeng Motor Group may be planning a merger into what would become the country's largest automaker, recent disclosures suggest.

Changan and Dongfeng said Sunday that their respective controlling shareholders are each planning a "restructuring" with an unidentified fellow "central state-owned enterprise," spurring speculation that the two intend to merge with each other.
