Cup holders optional: Toyota cuts wait times by limiting features

'Recommended models' include pared down equipment to boost production efficiency

Toyota Motor will begin selling a "recommended model" for the Sienta compact minivan, which went on sale this month.

TOKYO -- Toyota Motor will begin selling models with limited optional equipment, allowing for more efficient production and reducing delivery times to a quarter of other models.

Delivery times for new cars have stretched as long as a year as automakers grapple with an industrywide parts shortage, including semiconductors, due to a supply chain crunch and other factors. Some manufacturers have suspended orders for certain models because of the snarl.
