TOKYO -- Honda Motor will manufacture all solid-state batteries for electric vehicles on a test production line from January, taking a step toward mass-producing the longer-lasting, higher-range batteries at low costs.

A production line -- billed as one of the biggest of its kind -- is being built in Tochigi prefecture with a total floor area of 27,400 square meters, the automaker announced Thursday. Total investment for the project is 43 billion yen ($278 million).
