TOKYO -- Hyundai Motor is challenging Chinese EV leader BYD in Japan with the spring launch of the Inster, an electric compact that is expected to cost less than 4 million yen ($26,000), the South Korea automaker said Friday.
The Inster will be Hyundai's fourth EV model in Japan, and the first in the compact size preferred by Japanese drivers. The car is about 1.6 meters wide, only slightly larger than a minicar, making it easy to handle on narrow urban streets. It is expected to have a range of more than 350 kilometers.
