Honda leans on China as US market loses gas

Lively market fuels Japanese automaker's third upgrade to yearly profit

TOKYO/GUANGZHOU -- Honda Motor is steering further toward the fast-growing Chinese market, where healthy sales propelled the automaker on Friday to upgrade its earnings forecast for the year through March for a third time.

The Japanese company's vehicle production volume in China eclipsed that in the U.S. for the first time in 2017. America is still Honda's top market, but China is closing the gap quickly. Betting on a young market eager for new innovations, Honda is also developing next-generation car technologies through a series of Chinese partnerships.
