HONG KONG -- The official announcement of merger talks between Honda Motor and Nissan Motor on Monday shows how vehicle electrification is pushing established industry leaders into a corner.

China, which has emerged as the world's largest maker and exporter of cars, is a driving force behind the industry's evolution. But Chinese state players that hitched themselves to big foreign names are sharing the pain.
