MUMBAI -- Honda Motor intends to offer an electric vehicle in India within three years as part of the Japanese automaker's bid to capture growing demand for EVs in a major global market.

Local subsidiary Honda Cars India made the announcement Tuesday while debuting the new Elevate sport utility vehicle at an event in New Delhi. The Elevate is gasoline powered, but the company plans to release an EV based on the SUV in three years.
