JAKARTA/BANGKOK -- Japanese automakers in Indonesia are struggling to keep top employees from jumping ship to Asian rivals arriving in the market.

These days, the main headhunter is BYD, the Chinese electric car manufacturer that is building a $1 billion plant in West Java province with the capacity to produce 150,000 vehicles a year.
