TOKYO/MUMBAI -- India's Maruti Suzuki has adopted plans to raise its automobile production capacity by up to 1 million units, an unusually big increase designed to guard its top share in the country and propel expansion into Africa.

The increase is equivalent to nearly 20% of India's overall auto market. But the Suzuki Motor unit disclosed no details about the timing of this expansion or which vehicles will be involved.
