India's electric motorcycle market ready for takeoff

High fuel prices and air pollution spur shift away from gas guzzlers

MUMBAI -- The electric motorcycle market is beginning to see signs of a boom in India as sky-high fuel prices and concerns about air pollution power a move away from their gas guzzling cousins.

Tejas Rane, a man in his late 20s who lives in the commercial capital of Mumbai, has been riding Honda motorcycles and other brands for a long time, but recently he has begun to consider buying an electric version. "The reason is quite clear, increasing petrol price. Furthermore, we can reduce pollution (with a) small contribution toward electric vehicles," he says.
