TOKYO -- Japanese used cars are still selling steadily in Russia a year after Japan began applying stricter export controls in August 2023, in contrast to the sharp decline in Japanese automakers' sales of new cars in Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
According to the Japan Used Motor Vehicle Exporters Association (JUMVEA), 132,217 used cars were exported to Russia from January to August. Although this was a decline of around 20% from the same period last year, Russia is still one of the most important markets for Japanese used car dealers, maintaining its position as the second-largest market after the United Arab Emirates.
