TOKYO -- Mazda Motor will share with Toyota Motor in-vehicle systems, the "brains" that operate the acceleration and safety control functions in next-generation vehicles, Nikkei has learned. The two automakers will jointly develop the systems, with Mazda hoping to cut development costs by up to 80%.

As electric vehicles spread and cars grow more sophisticated, Japanese companies are trying to keep pace with leading European and U.S. manufacturers amid heated competition.
