TOKYO -- Toyota Motor and other Japanese automakers are quickly forming ties across industries to develop the next generation of software-loaded vehicles, rushing to catch up with Chinese and U.S. competitors that have taken the lead in what have come to be known as "smartphones on wheels."

"We hope to cooperate with companies and continue to move forward," Toyota President Koji Sato said at a press conference in late October to announce the automaker's partnership with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone in artificial intelligence and other areas.
