TOKYO -- Toyota Motor will suspend shipments of some cars whose engine parts were found to have irregularities during certification tests, the company said Monday.

The automaker commissions Toyota Industries to develop diesel engines for its cars. A probe by an independent investigation panel revealed that Toyota Industries had cheated on certification tests for three diesel engine models developed for the automaker. Employees attempted to smooth out the results of horsepower output tests using software that differed from that used for mass production.
