TOKYO -- Toyota Motor remained No. 1 in global vehicle sales for a second year in 2021, limiting the impact of a semiconductor shortage more successfully than rivals and widening its lead over second-place Volkswagen.

General Motors slid to fifth place with an overall sales drop of 13%, but it saw sales of electric vehicles surge 130%, fueled by strong Chinese demand.
