TOKYO -- Executives of Toyota Motor and its subsidiary Daihatsu Motor apologized on Wednesday for widespread misconduct found within the unit that an independent panel said was the result of "extreme pressure" employees were under to develop vehicles quickly.

Daihatsu will stop shipping all cars it produces in Japan and elsewhere, and Toyota will stop shipping affected models. Daihatsu also said that it will soon suspend production, without giving details.
