SYDNEY -- BHP Billiton will build a factory for electric-car battery materials in Australia, part of a trend among resurgent mining companies to make new investments in this promising field.

The Anglo-Australian resource giant will spend around $43.2 million to set up a nickel sulfate plant near Perth, in the state of Western Australia, said Eduard Haegel, who oversees its nickel operations, at an international conference here.
