Company opens three-star hotel to capture wider market after making continual losses

SINGAPORE -- Hotel and resort operator Banyan Tree Holdings is opening its first resort hotel in Cuba under its new brand, Dhawa, to broaden its customer base.

The Dhawa Cayo Santa Maria is in Jardines del Rey archipelago known for its pristine beaches and diverse wildlife. It is the first of four projects in Cuba announced in 2015 in partnership with Gaviota Tourism Group, a Cuban government-linked hospitality group. It will be followed by another project by Banyan Tree's Angsana brand and two more openings on an island in Varadero, Matanzas.
