From the salt flats of Chile, an automotive revolution

As vehicles go increasingly electric, carmakers are doing everything they can to gain a technological edge on their rivals. Much of their focus is on developing better lithium-ion batteries, because few things grab drivers' attention more than superior travel range.

Nikkei staff photographers took a closer look at Japanese efforts to develop these crucial components, and at Chile, whose salt flats are providing much of the lithium powering this automotive revolution.
