Among the top 10 foreign contributors to China's reform and opening-up policy, which kicked off exactly four decades ago, Beijing included Konosuke Matsushita, the legendary Japanese business tycoon and founder of Panasonic.

The announcement on Dec. 18 recognized Matsushita as the "harbinger of an internationally recognized company committing to our reform and opening up." The selection criteria were not revealed and the list reflects Beijing's favor, but Panasonic was indeed one of the first foreign companies that helped rebuild China from the shambles caused by years of political turmoil, including the Cultural Revolution.
