Cloud computing was supposed to be a surefire growth driver, but the future looks less sunny

HONG KONG -- When Alibaba Group suddenly announced it no longer planned to spin off its cloud unit, the Chinese tech titan cited "uncertainties" over its ability to procure advanced chips due to U.S. export controls.

In the weeks since, investors and analysts have been asking whether that is the real, or only, reason for the surprise move.
