Carlyle, Bain offer to buy Olympus' scientific instruments unit

TOKYO -- U.S. private equity firms, including Carlyle Group and Bain Capital, have tendered bids for Olympus' scientific instruments business, Nikkei has learned, in a transaction that could be worth as much as 200 billion yen ($1.5 billion).
