HONG KONG -- China's JD.com is in the "very preliminary stages" of evaluating a possible acquisition of U.K. electronics store Currys, the e-commerce retailer said, as it faces increasingly fierce competition in its home market.

"There can be no certainty that any offer will ultimately be made for Currys, nor as to the terms on which any offer might be made. A further announcement will be made if and when appropriate," the company said in a filing to the London Stock Exchange on Monday.
