TOKYO -- Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard has established an entity in Japan as it pushes ahead with a takeover bid for Seven & i, the owner of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, Nikkei learned on Friday.

Couche-Tard has already registered a subsidiary with Japanese authorities. The company confirmed to Nikkei that it has set up the entity "to create the path to establishing an office in Japan in the future." The company did not provide further details, such as how the subsidiary would be staffed or when operations might commence.
