NEW YORK/WASHINGTON/TOKYO -- A U.S. government panel examining Nippon Steel's potential acquisition of U.S. Steel did not reach a unanimous conclusion to approve the Japanese steelmaker's bid, setting the stage for President Joe Biden to block it.

The latest move comes after a yearlong discussion between Nippon Steel and the powerful investment screening panel, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), to assuage national security concerns, with Monday the deadline for its review.
