TOKYO -- Japan Tobacco  has reached a deal to purchase Russia's fourth-largest tobacco company, fortifying its lead in a key foreign market as its domestic operations struggle.

The company said Friday it will acquire Donskoy Tabak, along with compatriot Pereslavl-Tabak and Greece's Syneteristiki Kapnoviomihania Ellados Sekap, for 90 billion rubles ($1.56 billion). JT will also take on 10 billion rubles in interest-bearing debt, making this deal its fourth-largest acquisition.
