TOKYO -- Nippon Steel reiterated its interest in acquiring U.S. Steel on Friday, as tariffs by the Trump administration and other uncertainties facing the steel industry heighten the importance of the deal.

"Turning [U.S. Steel] into our wholly owned subsidiary is the starting point of negotiations," Tadashi Imai, president and chief operating officer, said at Nippon Steel's earnings briefing that day. "We are discussing various proposals."
