NEW YORK/WASHINGTON -- Nippon Steel Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Takahiro Mori, together with U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt, met several U.S. Treasury Department officials on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the talks.

Details of the discussions have not been disclosed. According to a company official, the U.S. side offered to hold the meeting, and "the visit to the U.S. by the vice chairman and others was decided in a rush." The Treasury Department oversees the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which screens foreign investment deals for security risks.
