TOKYO -- Nippon Steel said on Wednesday that U.S. citizens will make up the majority of the board of directors of U.S. Steel and that Americans will form the "core" of the company's management if the Japanese player succeeds in its proposed acquisition.

The pledges came as Nippon Steel released details of how it would manage U.S. Steel after completing the pending deal, which has drawn resistance from the Pittsburgh-based company's labor union and U.S. President Joe Biden, as well as the Democratic and Republican candidates running to replace him: Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
