TOKYO -- Nippon Steel has proposed to the U.S. government a substantial capital investment in U.S. Steel as it seeks to get the green light from President Donald Trump on the stalled acquisition deal.

"If the U.S. wants to revive its manufacturing [through the Trump tariffs], they will need our technology and the huge investment," a Nippon Steel executive told Nikkei.
